I taught myself to bake bread in a cob oven.
Chopping wood, building a fire, and baking handmade loaves just for friends and family. This slow way of working took me out of the city without having to leave my backward. And it opened me up to the wonders of bread that still fascinate me to this day.
My name is Arturo Enciso and I’m a baker.
My partner, Ana, and I set up Gusto Bread out of our living room in 2017
– starting really small, with the support of local customers and restaurant owners, the business grew from pop-ups to consistent daily production.
In these two short years, our community has grown so much that
we’re ready to move operations out of our house and into a bigger space.
We’ve still got the same passion for bread as when we baked those first California loaves. We’ve got a great team that is eager to do more.
And we’re excited to say that we’ve found the perfect spot near Retro Row in Long Beach for Gusto Bread to become the storefront bakery you all want and deserve!
Building a commercial bakery from scratch is expensive and we’re asking for your contribution to help make this vision a reality.
Investing in us now means that you’ll have a warm and inviting bakery serving artisanal food for YEARS to come.
Up until now, all our growth has been organic and we’ve constantly re-invested in the business to keep it moving.
This next step is going to require us to take a HUGE leap and we can only do it with the full support of our community behind us.
If all goes as planned, Long Beach will have an artisanal bread bakery by mid 2020…
We hope you’re as excited as we are!
We love the cottage! Why change it?
We love it too, but being a cottage business is so limited… We are ready to grow – and you’ve shown us you’re ready too!
We want to be able to offer you more quantity, more varieties of old-world breads and pastries, in a place that’s open daily with regular hours so you can pop in any time for a baguette or a quick snack. We’re eager to have the chance of more capacity, to share our heritage in fun new ways, and to offer warm and comforting foods that encourage homemade meals and friendly gatherings.
To round out the bakery, we’ll also have a small retail area featuring the finest ingredients (cheese, oils, honey, jams, spices, etc) made by local vendors to inspire your dishes and create deliciously memorable gift baskets.
What your donation means to us.
We are constantly overwhelmed by the support we receive from all of you on a weekly basis. You have shown us that we have a viable business and that is priceless.
With this campaign, we are giving you the chance to say a wholehearted YES to the future of Gusto Bread. To be a part of the next chapter, while being able to boast that you knew us “back when they were out of a house.”
We hope the levels of rewards offered are fun and interesting enough to fit our diverse community. We’ve got custom-named starters, new boat bags and enamel mugs, loaf subscriptions, gift certificates, pizza parties and workshops, AND a loaf-every-time-you-come-in level of commitment.
How will the community funds be used?
The money we gather on this platform will be used first and foremost for planning and permitting costs, as well as the down-payment on our largest piece of equipment: the bread oven!
To give you a sense of the entire scope, we need to raise $300,000+ for this project from start to finish. Whatever we can gather through this community campaign will allow us to offset our need for high-interest loans.
